As soon as Jose Mourinho was named as Tottenham Hotspur manager, it always felt likely (to me anyway) that a certain Nemanja Matic would follow him to White Hart Lane.
Scott McTominay has emerged as the first-choice holding midfielder for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while Matic has always enjoyed working under the self-proclaimed Special One. It seems like a no-brainer, right?
Well today, Bleacher Report ran an article on the five most likely January signings, and at their number one spot was a proposed Matic move to Spurs…
They state that Spurs are interested in the 31-year-old, while United are pushing for a £15million transfer fee – though they would accept less if they need to, presumably to ensure a deal gets done.
Matic had a stellar first term at Old Trafford, though he massively regressed in his second campaign. It’s a shame because during his time at Chelsea, the Serbian was arguably the best defensive midfielder in the country.
With it being a season which ends with a major international tournament directly following it, Matic needs to be playing regularly to be involved in the European Championships with Serbia. No doubt he’ll be pushing for a move, United will want an ageing player off the books while Mourinho will see the veteran as someone who can improve his squad.
It does seem to make a lot of sense, though United will need to replace him if Matic does leave.
