Steven Gerrard: Man United can still improve in these two key positions

Manchester United have made a simply sublime start to the 2017/18 Premier League campaign, with Jose Mourinho’s men picking up two wins from two and scoring eight goals in the process. Things are looking bright, but we have to remember that this is just the start.

It’s up to the gaffer to keep his players’ feet firmly on the ground, but we could well be in for an exciting season.

Steven Gerrard, one of Manchester United’s biggest enemies, has had his say on the situation – and he reckons that the Red Devils have a side capable of challenging for the title.

However, if he’s being picky, he reckons that the Old Trafford club can still improve in two key areas of the field. Gerrard thinks that his old foe still needs a top-class left-back, as well as a centre-back pairing ala Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

“I think they’ve got the squad compete for the title now,” Gerrard said on Sky Sports, as per the Daily Express.

“But it can improve in certain areas. I still think they need a top-class left-back. “

“I’m still not sure the centre-half partnership is one of a (Rio) Ferdinand and (Nemanja) Vidic. “

“They’re the areas for me if you’re being ultra fussy.”

Right now, Daley Blind is playing in the left-back slot but it is quite easy to see that it isn’t his natural position. The same can also be said of Matteo Darmian, who has played out there on occasion, too. Perhaps the best option we have is Luke Shaw, but he’s currently out injured.

As for the centre-back area, I think we’re fine. Eric Bailly is just an outstanding defender and Phil Jones has made a bright start to the season. On top of that, we have new signing Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo (who is currently out injured).

There is an excitement around the Theatre of Dreams about the start to the season, and it definitely feels like we could well challenge for the title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left.
