Talented Man United pair all-but-certain to miss Chelsea game due to U21 participation

Manchester United take on Chelsea tomorrow, with the Red Devils in London preparing for the Carabao Cup encounter.

With a place in the quarter-final at stake, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to make it three away wins on the bounce after some horrendous form on the road to start the season.

However, before the seniors game, the Reds are currently playing a U21 fixture against Doncaster Rovers. To my surprise, both Mason Greenwood and Tahith Chong started in that fixture – meaning the pair of United starlets are all-but-certain to miss Chelsea away due to their participation at youth level.

I’m honestly not sure what the thinking is here. There’s no way the pair can play tonight and then for the first-team tomorrow – definitely not for 90 minutes anyway.

I guess that both Chong and Greenwood need the minutes as they’ve been used sparingly over the last few weeks since the international break, so that could explain it. I just don’t know why they’re not both shoe-ins to start tomorrow as the experience would be invaluable.

To me, it makes me think that Solskjaer is taking this competition super seriously and he’s planning on going pretty close to full strength. If we’re being realistic, this is probably our best chance at silverware this term so maybe it isn’t the worst idea…
