Teden Mengi has come in for high praise from his Derby County manager, Wayne Rooney, after a top display last night.
It wasn’t too long ago when Teden Mengi was indefinitely promoted to the Manchester United first-team following some impressive displays at U23 level.
Since then, things have changed. Mengi found opportunities limited, while he was attracting loan interest aplenty. In the end, the 18-year-old centre-half would end up at Derby County, working with United legend, Wayne Rooney.
No doubt the regular playing time will do wonders for his confidence and development, while last night, he’d put in a Man of the Match display during Derby County’s 0-0 draw with Barnsley.
Following the game, the United loanee would be on the receiving end of high praise from his manager, with Rooney seeming seriously impressed with Mengi’s start to life in Derby.
Check out what Rooney had to say about Mengi here:
“Teden Mengi was excellent in the middle of the three centre-backs and I thought Craig Forsyth – his first game for a while – did well and Kelle Roos was excellent in goal.” Rooney is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.
“He’s (Mengi) obviously young, but he’s started three games for us now. The three games were tough, but it shows the trust I have in him in dealing with physical strikers.”
For what it’s worth, I still truly believe Mengi will play a role in the United first-team at some point in the not too distant future.
When he returns to Old Trafford on the back of this loan move, he’ll be a far better player. I guess the bad news for Mengi is that United may well sign a new centre-half this summer – meaning the teenager may fall further down the pecking order.
But, as the old saying goes, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Hopefully, there’s some sort of pre-season where Mengi can show everyone just how good he is – including manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
