Man United manager Erik ten Hag has his eyes on Inter Milan right-back, Denzel Dumfries.
It’s no secret that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is going to be leaving Manchester United this summer, assuming the Red Devils can find a willing buyer.
Erik ten Hag, presumably, doesn’t see the Englishman as someone who fits into his plans from the 2022/23 season and beyond.
Let’s just say Wan-Bissaka is no longer here. That leaves United with just Diogo Dalot as the only viable right-back at the club. Hence, a move to sign a new right-sided defender should be high atop Ten Hag’s priority list. Enter Denzel Dumfries.
It’s Italian journalist Nicolo Schira with the claim, who states that United are ‘working to sign’ a new right-back this summer. On top of that, Ten Hag ‘appreciates’ the 26-year-old Dumfries.
Dumfries currently plies his trade for Inter Milan in the Serie A and in 2021/22, the Dutchman enjoyed a stunning debut season for the Italian giants. He’d play in 45 games across all competitions, looking mightily impressive in most of them.
What’s interesting about this report is that it’s claimed if an ‘important’ bid arrives, Inter could cash in on Dumfries after just one season. No exact figure is given, but you’d expect Inter would want significantly more than the £13m they paid to acquire the right-back.
Dumfries is a player who has all the tools. He’s quick, strong and good on both sides of the ball. Full-backs play a huge role in the modern-day game and there’s no doubt he’d be an upgrade for United.
The Netherlands international would need time to adjust if this move did happen, though I have to be honest, I’d feel much more comfortable with him in our starting XI over both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka.
There would be some consistency concerns with Dumfries, who has blown hot and cold throughout his career, while moving to a massive club like United does bring its own pressure. Hence why the year he’s had with another huge club like Inter can only help him in the long run.
