Ten Hag has confirmed it’ll take Axel Tuanzebe several weeks to get back to speed, before he’s ready to play competitive minutes.
Defensively, Manchester United have been much-improved this term. Credit to Erik ten Hag and his coaches for that. Obviously the signing of Lisandro Martinez helped.
One forgotten centre-back at Old Trafford right now is Axel Tuanzebe. The young Mancunian, who was once regarded as a hot prospect, has spent far too long out injured over recent years. This term has been a similar story.
Now aged 25, Tuanzebe has been out for months. He then had to do some individual rehab before he was able to be reintroduced into the first-team mix.
Although he’s now back out there in team training, Ten Hag has confirmed it’ll ‘take weeks’ for the player to get back up to speed, before he’s ready to play again.
When asked about approaching with caution on the injury front, Ten Hag responded:
“Definitely, Axel, it was a long time that he was not available for matches or for training. Individual rehab was really hard for him. Then, you can understand, it takes time; back in training as well, and in team training, then you have to build up. So that will take weeks.” Ten Hag told ManUtd.com.
Tuanzebe is an intriguing case. He has all the talent. I’ll always remember that stunning job he did against Kylian Mbappe a few years ago. However, there comes a team when being out injured for so long is just a huge problem.
Let’s face it, the United defence is playing super well right now. He’s probably sixth (at best) in the pecking order in that area of the field. Although Harry Maguire may be sold this summer, he’ll still be somewhat far away from starting games regularly.
I do think that at this point, it probably makes sense to let Tuanzebe go permanently over the summer. if he can play regularly elsewhere, that may help him overcome those injury problems. I just don’t see those opportunities coming for him here in Manchester.
