Man United have identified Matthijs de Ligt as a possible summer signing, with Erik ten Hag pushing for the move.
Having conceded more goals than any other side in the top ten last season, Manchester United could certainly do with a defensive presence or two.
It’s fair to say both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof haven’t coped with the pressure at Old Trafford, while Raphael Varane was blighted by his own issues. It’s why a move for another elite-level centre-half makes sense.
Enter, Matthijs de Ligt.
United have been linked with the Dutchman before. I guess it was an obvious claim to make given his previous ties with Erik ten Hag.
The Red Devils are once again rumoured to be keen on adding De Ligt to the playing squad. The claim comes from Corriere dello Sport (Monday print edition). Shout out to Sport Witness for the translation.
Apparently, United are ‘ready to forcefully enter the scene’ to sign De Ligt, who, as things stand, isn’t willing to renew his contract in Turin. Chelsea are also keen on signing the player, with the London club deemed to be the frontrunners as things stand.
The Old Trafford club have ‘‘not yet taken official steps, but are ready to take them’. Presumably, United are ready to reach out to Juventus and make some sort of transfer proposal for De Ligt.
For Ten Hag, the 22-year-old is seen as ‘the priority’ right now, as United’s gaffer ‘pushes to attempt an assault on the boy he launched at a very young age at Ajax’
De Ligt will not come cheaply for the eventual buyer, with fees of around £75-80m mentioned by Corriere dello Sport in their article.
