Ten Hag tells Axel Tuanzebe to find a new club this summer

Erik ten Hag has told Axel Tuanzebe he is free to find a new club this summer.

Erik ten Hag will now have a clearer overall picture of this Manchester United squad. The gaffer knows who is good enough and perhaps more importantly, who isn’t.

Making these tough decisions to sell players is probably the most difficult part about being a manager at the highest level, though that’s the nature of the game.

According to Football Insider, Ten Hag is set to start a brutal clear out of eight players, in order to make room (and money) for new signings.

Atop that list is Axel Tuanzebe. According to the report, Ten Hag ‘has told’ the 25-year-old that he is ‘free to find a new club’ this summer.

Apparently, Tuanzebe’s deal has the option to be extended by an extra year. Instead of activating that, he’ll be allowed to leave on a free transfer this summer instead.

On top of Tuanzebe, United are putting Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams and Harry Maguire up for sale. There’s also a chance David de Gea could leave.

What makes this trickier is the fact that United are undergoing a potential ownership change. Money being spent this summer is far from a given if the Glazers remain in charge. It largely depends on whether the club sale is sorted beforehand. Right now, that looks unlikely.

As a manager, you have to be brutal. Ten Hag has identified potential weak links in his squad and he has to ship them out as soon as possible. The issue here is that these guys at United are all on massive wages – making it hard to find clubs who are willing to buy (and match) their contracts.

That said, I remain somewhat hopeful that United can generate some funds through player sales.
