Erik ten Hag is not yet officially in charge of Man United, though he’s already making transfer plans.
Well, it feels like we’re not too far away from hearing something official on Erik ten Hag being appointed Manchester United’s next manager. Credit has to go to the club for identifying their man obtaining him smoothly and getting this deal done before the summer.
With a new manager comes fresh ideas and tactics. In turn, new players need to be signed in order to fulfil those demands.
There’s no doubt that some players will have to be moved on as they won’t fit Ten Hag’s philosophy. Others, who Ten Hag has likely already earmarked as signings, will possibly come in. One player the Dutchman is looking at acquiring is someone he knows well from his time at Ajax; Jurrien Timber.
The story comes from De Telegraaf, with the translation coming via The Sun. It’s stated that Ten Hag will look to make the 20-year-old centre-back one of his main transfer targets at United.
Timber has emerged and developed under Ten Hag, replacing Matthijs de Ligt as the key defensive stalwart at Ajax. However, United aren’t the only interested party, with Manchester City also keen.
When you’re still so young in footballing terms, big-money moves like this will always involve some sort of risk. Timber has no Premier League experience and is still so raw overall. That said, it’s probably worth the gamble given how average our current set of centre-backs have been performing this year.
I guess it all comes down to two things. One is whether Ajax want to sell, particularly to the same club to which they’re going to lose their manager. And whether United can overcome stiff competition from their noisy neighbours to acquire one of the best young talents within the sport.
