Manchester United take on Astana at Old Trafford on Thursday, with the Red Devils looking to start their continental campaign with a huge three points.
Don’t forget that the last time United were in this competition they won the whole thing beating Ajax in the final. This time around, there’s a different atmosphere around the Theatre of Dreams. A youthful approach is being taken by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, quite frankly, it’s refreshing to see the Reds going back to what they do best.
To start this season, us fans have been clamouring to see our talented academy products in action – particularly after they were excellent during pre-season tour. Anyway, here at Old Trafford faithful, we think there are three players who could get their first starts of the season on Thursday night.
Mason Greenwood
This one feels pretty obvious, but Mason Greenwood has made a couple of substitute appearances to start the term. With the games now to start coming thick and fast, expect the 17-year-old to be handed regular spots within Ole’s first XI.
After a convincing performance against Cardiff City on the final day of the 2018/19 campaign, surely this is the perfect chance to throw the attacker into the mix? Particularly with the squad still being severely struck by injury…
Axel Tuanzebe
Axel Tuanzebe was outstanding for Aston Villa towards the end of last term, forming a brilliant partnership with Tyrone Mings. The youngster has leadership qualities, is great on the ball and is so calm and composed. What’s not to like?
With Victor Lindelof still looking rather shaky at the back, this feels like the opportune moment to give Tuanzebe his first start of the season. Who knows, if he plays well, he could make that spot his own for the foreseeable future.
Angel Gomes
The wildcard. Angel Gomes was probably the player I enjoyed watching most on tour. His movement, vision and execution was absolutely out of this world. I liken him to a Juan Mata with pace and it’s his time to shine.
Aged 19, Gomes actually made his debut a few years ago now but we’ve not seen him since. With his contract expiring at the end of this season, Solskjaer has to tread very carefully. Either hand him starts or face the very real possibility of him leaving for free next summer.
