Tom Heaton undergoes Man United medical, set to sign until 2023: report

Tom Heaton has undergone his Manchester United medical, with the goalie set to sign a two-year deal at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils need a few marquee signings in order to really kick on and challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title. Sometimes, though, big-name additions aren’t all that’s required.

In a summer window during which Manchester United have lost hardly the best back-up goalkeeper in world football in the form of Sergio Romero, that’s a squad spot that needs filling. Enter, Tom Heaton.

A few days ago, we covered a story from Fabrizio Romano, who claimed that Heaton would have his medical this week.

The Aston Villa man is available on a free transfer this summer after his contract with the Midlands outfit expired. It seems as though Manchester United are closing in on bringing Heaton back home to Old Trafford.

Apparently, Heaton’s medical is now complete, with the 35-year-old set to sign for United on a contract until June 2023. That’s, once again, according to the usually reliable Fabrizio Romano.

Heaton spent eight years at United between 2002-2010, the first few years of which he’d play in the Red Devils’ youth teams. Sadly, the goalie would find it hard to earn first-team minutes and he’d have to move on.

Since then, Heaton has enjoyed great spells at both Burnley and Aston Villa, putting in some brilliant performances against United over the years. Now, the Chester-born shot-stopper is heading back to the North West, presumably to deputise either Dean Henderson or David de Gea.

Again, this isn’t the marquee signing that most United fans want, but it’s an astute addition. Heaton brings plenty of experience to a pretty young dressing room. He’ll also play plenty of football over the next couple of years in the cup competitions and whatnot.

Hopefully, we hear an official announcement pretty soon.
