Manchester United could just have been handed some brilliant news in their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid. According to the Daily Mail, who cite reports in Spain, the 26-year-old Frenchman has told his current club that he is ready to leave them this summer.
Griezmann has spearheaded a supremely talented Atletico team over the last few years, with his brilliant trickery, eye for a goal and all-round brilliance. For a player of his calibre to come out and tell the Spanish giants that he is ready to leave only bodes well for us.
The attacker has been of top priority to Manchester United, and he’d certainly fill that void of a marquee signing for Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff.
Put simply, Griezmann would give us another dimension going forward. Although we have a talented front line, at times this season it felt like Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were just one step ahead of everyone else. To get another player in on that wavelength can only be a good thing for the Old Trafford side.
I guess that securing Champions League football gives us every chance at signing one of the best players on the market over the summer, but it won’t be a cheap decision. His transfer release clause stands at somewhere around the £85million mark, and I don’t think Mourinho will think twice about paying that, given he paid more to land the services of Paul Pogba twelve months ago.
