Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed in principle to join Manchester United this summer, claim the Telegraph. Vermaelen, 28, has one year left on his contract, and Manchester United will now have to wait until after the World Cup to try and agree a fee with the Gunners for his signature.
Strengthening at the back is a must for Manchester United football club, and with around six positions to strengthen in, bringing in someone like Vermaelen to fill one of the centre-back slots would be a clever move.
He’s experienced, and knows the Premier League well. He’s also a left-footer, and Louis van Gaal likes to have one left-footer and one right-footer at the heart of his defence, as he believes it improves the balance of the team.
Lets not forget Vermaelen was one of the best centre-backs in the league a couple of seasons ago, and under the right management he could flourish. Just look at how much Louis van Gaal got out of Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar against Spain on Saturday, and if he could do that with a better player in Vermaelen, this could turn out to be a really shrewd move.
