Tyrell Malacia will not play a single game in the 2023/24 season, as he still recovers from injury.

Manchester United’s season story has been defined by injuries. Erik ten Hag has been keen to not use it as an excuse, but it’s so tough when your squad is fully decimated by treatment table woes.

One player who epitomises the disastrous campaign is Tyrell Malacia. The Dutch full-back, signed for around £12m in the summer of 2022, hasn’t taken to the field once this term.

He’d pick up an injury around twelve months ago now, suffering setback after setback since. Obviously, it’s devastating for a player who is looking to make a name for himself in the toughest league in the world.

Now, The Athletic (subscription required) have provided an injury update on the 24-year-old United star. They go in depth about the ex-Feyenoord defenders’ last year or so…

It’s thought that Malacia, who is dealing with a knee injury, tried to play through the pain last season, in order to impress the coaching staff, fans and fellow players. Unfortunately, in doing so, he’s made matters worse.

Malacia is now set to return to Carrington this week, while consistently going between the Netherlands, Barcelona and Manchester as he works with an external specialist.

Malacia is expected to complete his recovery at the end of this season, suggesting he should be good to partake in pre-season tour and start getting back on the right path.

The part I found most interesting is the fact that Ten Hag believes Malacia’s absence is partly to blame for the Reds’ struggles this season.

No doubt having Malacia available when Luke Shaw has been out could have helped out a little bit, though I don’t think the Dutchman being unavailable is why our season has completely derailed so early.

I just wonder what sort of player we’re going to get upon Malacia’s return from injury. These knee problems are no joke. It literally could take him years to get back to tip top shape. Will United give him that time? Who knows…
