Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez will be leaving the club when his contract ends. Why’s this relevant, you ask? Well, Manchester United have been weighing up a move for Magpies midfielder, Sean Longstaff.
Today, the Manchester Evening News ran an article explaining what Benitez’s departure means for the Red Devils’ chance at signing Longstaff. In short, nothing has changed as the final decision on the midfielder’s future would have been left to their owner Mike Ashley anyway…
What’s interesting about the MEN’s story is that they say United have held ‘encouraging talks’ with the 21-year-old’s representatives, while the player ‘fits the mould’ of the young squad that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to build.
The MEN do reiterate that there are midfielders above Longstaff on United’s list of midfield targets, but I genuinely believe they could do an awful lot worse than the boyhood Geordie.
Longstaff only made his debut last December but he put in a string of seriously impressive performances before suffering an injury in March. Without doubt, his best display came against Manchester City, as the young man single-handedly bossed that game from start to finish in a 2-1 Newcastle victory.
I’ve seen United fans in uproar at the thought of being linked with some relative unknown from Newcastle and I’m not quite sure why. The only major concern is the fact that he has been out sidelined for four months now and it may take Longstaff a while to get back up to full speed again. Putting that aside, though, this boy oozes class – he actually reminds of of a young Michael Carrick…
