United Progress To Round Of Sixteen

This time last season we were struggling for form in European competition, what a difference a year makes! We’ve won four out of four group games and are already confirmed as winners of Group H. This means we can rest our key players and hopefully give our youngsters some more big match experience.

The best part of this scenario is the fact that we can focus all our attentions on the Premier League for the rest of 2012, as we all know the Christmas period is integral to any side challenging for the title and looking at our fixtures, we’d hope to open up that gap at the top of the table.

The two Champions League games remaining are Galatasaray away and CFR Cluj at home, I expect Sir Alex to still play fairly strong sides as a show of respect for the quality of the opposition, but I’d also expect him to use these games as a way of blooding some of the youngsters into the United first team. One player I’d love to see get a starting spot would be Nick Powell, he’s potentially the player our midfield has been lacking over the past few years and he looks right at home in a United shirt already. With our defensive problems seemingly continuing, I’d also expect Scott Wootton to feature at some point.

The only downside from last night came in the form of another couple of injuries, Sir Alex confirmed that Nani felt his hamstring tighten and was taken off as a precaution, whereas Jonny Evans left the pitch with a niggle to his groin. Niether injury is thought to be serious, however we could do with Jonny being fit for Villa away on Saturday.
