David Moyes has revealed that United came ‘very close’ to securing the signature of a ‘major major’ signing in the summer. Although the identity of the player hasn’t been revealed, there are only a handful of players who can be classed as a ‘major major’ signing. But i’m not sure why he feels the need to divulge this information.
The fact that we came close to a major signing just depresses me even more to be honest, knowing that a shambolic summer by both Moyes and Woodward could’ve resulted in a huge signing if they played their cards right.
Whilst speaking to the press, Moyes said:
“We have got the money and the club will spend, there is no question about that.
“We were close to a couple of really major signings [in the summer] but, in the end, we didn’t quite get there… Players have chosen other clubs or made their decisions elsewhere.”
“We were very close to a major, major signing,” he said. “It’s easy to say now, ‘Well, you didn’t do it’ but we were very close to a major signing when the club would have definitely shown what its worth is.”
He then went on to add that we won’t be going back in for that same player in January or the summer, because he’d be surprised if their club decides to sell that particular player. Personally, I think it was Gareth Bale.
Moyes then talked about his future goals at the club, and what he hopes his signings will achieve:
“I want players going forward and not just for the next six months. If I can get someone to be with us for the next six or seven years I want to bring them in as soon as I can.
“But a lot of [potential targets] may well be at clubs in the Champions League or at clubs who are not willing to sell because they may be in a good league position at this moment in time.”
The boss is saying all the right things, he now needs to act on that and attract some big names to Old Trafford.
