Victor Lindelof picks up knock in training, unavailable vs Atalanta

Man United will not be able to call upon Victor Lindelof for tonight’s game against Atalanta.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pulled it out of the bag last time out, buying himself some extra time at the very least.

After heroics in the last outing against Atalanta, United found themselves sitting atop their Champions League group. Another win here on the road later today will reaffirm that position.

Although the squad are already out in Italy, one man has been left at home. United were dealt a late injury blow, with one star ruled out of this game with a knock; Victor Lindelof.

The story comes from The Mirror, who confirm that Solskjaer was forced into the late change at the last minute.

Lindelof started and played well against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, with the back five really suiting his style of play. It also means less emphasis is placed upon his defensive duties.

This does make me question whether Solskjaer will revert back to a four-at-the-back system here in Lindelof’s absence. Either that, or we could see some rare game time for Eric Bailly, who we’ve hardly seen over the last year or two.

I guess it all depends on Atalanta and how they’re planning to set up. The Serie A outfit are a team that loves to be on the front-foot and attack, so sitting back, soaking up that pressure and looking to hit them on the break could definitely be the way to go here.

Not only will we miss Lindelof’s defensive attributes, he’s also underrated with the ball at his feet. I’d argue that before Rapha Varane got here, the Ice Man was probably our best ball-playing defender.

Hopefully, this injury isn’t anything long-term as we’re going to need Lindelof over the course of what’s looking like a hectic few months for the Red Devils.
