Manchester United Football Club have been linked with a move to bring Sweden centre-back, Victor Lindelof, to Old Trafford. The defender currently plies his trade for SL Benfica in the Portuguese league, where he is making a real name for himself.
The 22-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Iceman’ has spoken out on the reports linking him with a move to the Theatre of Dreams. He has admitted that there will always be rumours, but he’ll continue to work hard for Benfica where he is really enjoying himself at this point in time.
“There are rumours that there is always, at all times,” Lindelof has said to VLT, quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“I will say the same thing I always do, I have a contract with Benfica.”
“I have played there for five years and really enjoy myself.”
“I’m still young and I feel I’m developing all of the time, football down there gives me a lot.”
“So my answer will always be that I get on very well at Benfica and that’s where my focus is.”
I guess that this is the answer that most footballers would respond with. As of right now, it seems to me like there is no deal set in place, and to be honest, it looks like the clubs are far from reaching an agreement in my opinion.
Jose Mourinho seems like a fan of Lindelof’s as he was linked with a move to Old Trafford in January, before Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo played like machines for a couple of months.
It does seem clear that United do need to bring in a centre-half of some sort. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling seem to constantly be injured, and although the aforementioned Bailly and Rojo have been great – they need help when the going gets tough.
Lindelof is obviously quite talented and he definitely has time on his side. Personally, I’d prefer to see someone with a bit more experience and know-how come in though. Someone who can lead a back line in those tight-knit matches, whilst urging the players in front of him to push onwards and try to score. I feel that is what we’ve lacked recently.
