Victor Lindelof will consider his Man United future this summer.
Under Erik ten Hag, different players have come to the fore, while others have dropped out of the starting line-up.
One man who falls into the latter category is Victor Lindelof. He, like Harry Maguire, has dropped to the bench, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane becoming the regular starters at the heart of the back four.
For Lindelof, he has gone from starting multiple games a week to becoming the fourth choice central defender at the club. Obviously, that’s less than ideal from his personal point of view.
As a result, Lindelof is well within his rights to start looking elsewhere. According to The Mirror, that seems to be the case. The 28-year-old has revealed he’ll consider his future when the summer comes around.
“I’m really looking forward to the games that we have and I spoke to Janne [Sweden’s manager] before to say I was really looking forward to coming here and to perform, and to be on the pitch with the guys again.” Lindelof told the media, including The Mirror.
“Like I said, I want to play, that’s why I play football, I want to play games, but I haven’t thought about that [transfer away], right now I’m just focusing on the national team and then of course, the rest of the season with the club. Then in the summer we’ll re-evaluate and see what is best.”
The centre-back has started just five league games all season, which is a considerable drop-off to a couple of years prior. The fact that Luke Shaw has also been selected to play centrally ahead of Lindelof is another kick in the teeth.
His comments make it pretty clear – he wants to be playing games on a regular basis. I’m not sure United can offer him that. Hence, he could well be moved on – though the club will not sell unless the price is right.
Honestly, I’d like to keep Lindelof and let Maguire go instead, though as things stand, I can see a scenario during which both of them are sold.
It could mean Ten Hag has to spend some time thinking about bringing in at least one new central defender this summer, though other areas must be prioritised – like bringing in a top-class forward.
