Manchester United’s defensive options are nothing short of awful at this point in time. Surely, it’s an area that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to improve going into the 2019/20 campaign.
One player who I always thought could make an impact is Axel Tuanzebe. The talented 21-year-old spent last season out on loan with Aston Villa – greatly impressing as the Midlands side earned their place back in the Premier League.
Today though, according to the Daily Mail, Villa are set to ‘launch a bid’ to bring Tuanzebe back to Villa Park for the upcoming term.
Villa boss Dean Smith would prefer to sign Tuanzebe on a permanent basis, although it’s ‘unclear’ as to whether United are willing to let him go for good.
Another option is a loan move with the option to buy, and if that happens United will insist on a sell-on clause being inserted into Tuanzebe’s contract.
Shortly after writing the article, Mike Keegan took to Twitter to offer more insight. He claimed that an £8million fee has been mentioned, although nothing is agreed as this point – while United may well ask for more.
It’s a tricky situation. I stand by the fact that moving forward with Tuanzebe and binning off Phil Jones is the best option. Although if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t convinced by what Tuanzebe can offer – selling him now while his value is high makes sense.
To get at least £8million for an up-and-comer who has barely featured for the first-team would be a good return – and it’s definitely going to be intriguing to see how this one plays out.
