Wayne Rooney could move to AS Monaco in the summer

It is believed that Wayne Rooney was very close to a Manchester United exit just over a year ago, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure meant that Rooney had a rethink and decided to stay at Old Trafford under David Moyes. Since then, Rooney has penned a new five-year deal at United, and is now under contract for the next four-and-a-half seasons.

AS Monaco were the front runners for his signature just over twelve months ago, and according to todays Telegraph piece by Oliver Brown, the French side are still extremely keen on bringing England’s best player to Monaco.

It was thought that Rooney was tempted by the tax-free wages he was offered by the big-spending Ligue 1 side, and the prospect of linking up with Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez was a mouthwatering one.

Since then though, Monaco’s plans to become the best team in the world have stalled. Rodriguez made the move to Real Madrid this year, and obviously Falcao is now at Manchester United.

Monaco themselves have openly admitted that they’d still love to bring Rooney over to France, as he’ll certainly boost their stature as one of the quickest growing football clubs on the planet.
