Wayne Rooney names four players Man United should build around

Wayne Rooney was full of praise for some Man United players live on Sky Sports last night.

Manchester United Football Club are in need of major overhaul. All across the board.

New manager, new players, new personality, new ideas. It’s going to be a long road back to the top. If it were me, I’d have a good clear out this summer and get rid of all those who are negatively impacting the dressing room and then start again around a solid core of guys who want to succeed. Even if it takes multiple years, that’s exactly what is needed.

While speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Wayne Rooney was full of praise for United in several aspects, while giving some insight in regards to how the club should move going forward.

Rooney went as far as naming four players, all of whom he had praise for, who the club should build around going forward; Scott McTominay, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.

Check out what Wayne Rooney had to say in full here:

“I think, as we said, they’ve got good young players,” Rooney told Sky Sports live on air, per the MEN, when asked about United’s rebuild.

“I think [Jadon] Sancho will be better next year, Marcus will be better next year. They’ve got good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, brings quality. Scott McTominay’s done well.

“So they do have some good young players, you just have to get some confidence and get them believing that they’re good players and perform at the best level. And then, obviously, whoever the new manager is, I’m sure he’ll bring his own players in and build that through.”

At first glance, I feel like this is Rooney protecting his countrymen. Let’s be honest, Lingard has barely featured this term – and there’s a reason for that. He just hasn’t been good enough over the last couple of campaigns.

Sancho is the one I most agree with. This young man has been absolutely brilliant over the last few months, looking exactly like the top-class player we all knew he was when he signed for the club last summer.

I also reckon Rashford still has plenty to offer. Yes, he’s struggling at this very moment but his talent is still undeniable. Given a full pre-season, a run of games and a couple of goals under his belt, I believe he’ll prove to us all that he’s still one of the best attackers in the sport.

McTominay is an interesting one. I’m not sure I’d build around the Scotland international, rather, keep him at the club as a rotational option. He’s good enough to play some sort of part in a title side, but perhaps not a regular starter.

Is Wayne Rooney right? Should Man United plan for a future around these guys? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
