Ahead of the statue unveiling later today, Sir Alex had the usual business of conducting a pre-match press conference for the Media. We got the good news that Wayne Rooney has been training all week and is fit to start against QPR tomorrow.
The boss also confirmed that Nani is still unavailable, and Jonny Evans remains a doubt. Phil Jones may have to complete another 90 minutes tomorrow, Sir Alex confirmed that Smalling ‘should’ be fit after a shoulder problem but is it worth risking him facing a longer spell on the sidelines? The fixtures are coming thick and fast now, and we face QPR (H), West Ham (H) and Reading (A) within the space of a week, obtaining nine out of nine points is a must.
We missed Rooney severely against Norwich, we lacked any real fight and passion from the start, our midfield looked lost without him and we surrendered the middle of the park far too easily against a side of their stature.
Sir Alex said: “Wayne Rooney is fit and has been training all week which is good for us. He continued. “Jonny evans will hopefully train today but I don’t know if he will be available. Smalling should be available. He had a small shoulder injury the other night. I wanted to play Jones anyway and he did very well in his first game. Nani is not available yet. He has got a problem with his hamstring.”
