Wayne Rooney set to play on the wing for England

Wayne Rooney is set to start out on the left wing for England, according to the usually reliable Guardian newspaper. In training yesterday, Rooney was deployed out on the left wing, rather than the central role that he has recently been used to playing.

Being played out of position, along with often being left on the bench infamously left Rooney ‘angry and confused’ at Manchester United last summer, and Roy Hodgson will be hoping there won’t be a repeat of that this summer.

Playing the Three Lions’ best hope out of position certainly does seem a bit daft with just over a week to go before England’s first World Cup game. However Rooney does need the match sharpness, as he has barely played within the last six weeks.

Ross Barkley is believed to be getting the nod in the #10 role over Rooney, but it is very unlikely that Rooney will start out wide against Italy in Manaus, so why not just switch the two around?
