Wayne Rooney targets Manchester derby comeback

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has a chance of being fit for the Manchester derby on the 22nd September, as he continues to recover from the horrific head injury suffered in training. The gash on his forehead required ten stitches, which ruled him out of both of England’s qualifiers and United’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool.

The Crystal Palace game this weekend will probably come too soon for the 27-year old who is set to resume light training at the end of the week. The Sun claim that if the wound has healed sufficiently and Rooney is able to head the ball, he’ll be in contention to face local rivals City at the Etihad.

Wayne Rooney is one of those players that needs to be playing regularly to stay in shape, and even if he does make the derby in just under two weeks time, you do wonder how fit he’ll be. Either way having Rooney fit and ready to go will be a bonus for David Moyes, who now has plenty of options in all areas of the field after several players have overcome injuries over the international period.

With games in the Champions League and Capital One Cup both starting in the next fortnight, Moyes will be expected to utilise and manage his squad by making changes for some games. Hopefully players like Adnan Januzaj, Wilfried Zaha and Shinji Kagawa will all get their chance sooner rather than later.
