Manchester United starlet Wayne Rooney wants the captaincy on a full-time basis, and also believes the club can challenge for the Premier League title this season. Whilst speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Rooney added that although he would like the job, the decision is down to the manager.
Rather interestingly, Wayne Rooney started the first game against the LA Galaxy, but the captaincy was given to Darren Fletcher. Whether or not that was a ploy to avoid media speculation regarding Rooney getting the captaincy we don’t know, but we all know that Robin van Persie is the current favourite for the role.
Wayne Rooney said:
“Of course I would like the captaincy but it’s the manager’s decision who he chooses.
“I think he wants to work with the players and then choose a captain from there.
“I don’t think he was ever going to just walk in and choose a player from the off. I’m sure he will look at the players now and make his decision in a couple of weeks.”
Wayne also believes that confidence in the squad is key, and if United play to their abilities then a title shot isn’t out of reach:
“We can win the title. Last season was a bad one, we know that, but we are confident we can put it right. We have to believe we can win the title.”
