Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho serve as perfect reminders of Carrington to Manchester United. It’s like every place they have touched, every U21 team sheet and loan report they’ve completed is a hint for the next Old Trafford tale.
The only thing the academy fans should do is simply watch the academy games and then keep an eye on the senior games as the next Man Utd generation is put through the paces in youth, loan and cup football.

The clearcut defensive option is March 2007-born Harry Amass. Proficient with the left foot,he had Championship experience with Sheffield Wednesday (21 appearances, 1 goal) and Norwich City, though a serious hamstring injury in training ended his loan at Norwich after just 15 minutes of action. He returned to Carrington for rehabilitation and is expected to be fit for pre-season in mid-July 2026. There may be a lot of space for him at left-back.
Another way around the defence, and one that has been proven to work in lower league loans in the past, is to have maturity in a centre-back rather than instant glamour. Jack Kingdon has been much less visible lately but nevertheless, his involvement in Scotland during his youth should be an area of interest. Elyh Harrison is the most prominent academy product in goal having been loaned to Chester and Shrewsbury this season and William Murdock is making good progress as a U18 keeper.
Engine room engineers: The next midfield maestros
Shea Lacey is the hottest player on the team. He was an inside attacker who could be creative and capable with the ball at his feet and the right foot, with 10 goals and four assists set up for United’s U21s by mid-2026. The challenge has been fitness, but the ceiling is high.
Intrigue is added by Jack and Tyler Fletcher in the midfield. They were both born in 2007 and both came from Manchester City, and both are already in the senior squad of the United squad. Jack is the more advanced progressive passer while Tyler, who is recovering from an injury, has demonstrated good rhythm and confidence. Captain of the U18 team for the 2023/24 season, Finley McAllister is a less flashy, but useful tempo-setter and organiser.
Forging the future frontline: Attacking firepower
Bendito Mantato is fast, on target and threatens from the left foot. He made his Premier League debut on 30 December at 17, which proved that Carrington staff believe him to be more than a highlights player. Winger Ethan Williams, who is 20 years old and from Manchester, has already had the experience of playing on loan, and still has the goal threat from that treble.
The No.9 line is a bit stronger than before. Chido Obi is already in the senior group, Biancheri and Ethan Wheatley are still relevant in the loan group. Not all strikers are capable of breaking through, particularly if they have costly senior forwards in front of them, but United do have a variety of options now.
The verdict: Who will make the leap in 2026/27?
Amass, Lacey and Jack Fletcher are the top three breakout players. Amass occupies a unique position, Lacey has demonstrated rare creativity and Fletcher’s minutes as a senior have begun to demonstrate the beginning of trust building. Mantato will be the wildcard when injuries, cup rotation or form open up the door.
It was fair to say the Manchester United youth team looks fitter than it was initially thought. The loan army will tell part of the story but it is easier to watch the future stars of Old Trafford grow before anyone realises.
