What can Zlatan Ibrahimovic really offer Manchester United?

Following a quiet opening game in Euro 2016, Man United fans have voiced concerns over the rumoured arrival of former PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Zlatan has been one of world’s most formidable strikers for a decade now, but at the age of 34 he is well beyond his prime, and many are wondering just how much he can offer Jose Mourinho’s United.

Sweden’s opener against Ireland wasn’t the first time that Zlatan has been forgettable on the big stage, for PSG he was often quiet in crucial Champions League fixtures. While Zlatan’s amazing scoring record and list of trophies he accumulated at PSG are not to be dismissed, Ligue 1 defences are far from the calibre of their Premier League counterparts.

How he performs over the next two games will be very telling for United fans. While Sweden are far from favourites to lift the European Cup this summer, Zlatan is still one of the most menacing strikers in the tournament, and the success of Sweden is directly linked to how well he performs.

United already boast Wayne Rooney, but his future looks to lie in a deeper midfield role, leaving the young talents of Rashford and Martial as the club’s only strikers. It’s clear that another forward will need to be added to the roster, but what Zlatan can offer is more doubtful than many first thought.

A lot of talk has been surrounding Alvaro Morata, the Juventus striker who is one of Europe’s most prized forwards. Despite his plaudits, Morata only netted 7 times from 34 apps, and is better known for his creative work in a deeper role. Is that really what United require?

Long term target (if the tabloids are to be believed) Edinson Cavani, who has found himself in the shadow of Zlatan during his entire time at PSG, may have a few years on the Swede, but wasn’t returning the same quantity of goals.

Zlatan to United remains a tense and divisive issue amongst supporters, and just how valuable he’ll be remains to be seen. What we do know is, even if he only joins for a year, a season with Zlatan and Jose Mourinho will be something United fans will never forget.
