What will Marouane Fellaini offer Manchester United

Marouane Fellaini has split opinion amongst Manchester United fans already following his £27.5m move from Everton to Manchester. Many Reds are claming the big Belgian is ‘not a typical United player’, with many others firmly believing he’s the midfielder we’ve been crying out for. Personally, I think he’ll add an awful lot.

Remarkably, the club haven’t spent money on a midfielder since dishing out £17million for Owen Hargreaves’ signature back in 2007, six seasons ago! Since then Paul Scholes has retired, come out of retirement, and then called it a day again. Also Tom Cleverley has been promoted into the Manchester United first-team.

Sir Alex Ferguson often claimed about a ‘lack of value in the market’ in that area, and David Moyes certainly found that out this summer after failing with bids for various midfielders including Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas. In the end United paid £4m more than they should have for Maroane Fellaini, which suggests he probably wasn’t their first choice.

Despite that though, the 25-year old holding midfielder should become a regular member of United’s first choice line-up. He’ll offer United that defensive protection the club have been craving since Roy Keane’s departure back in 2005. He also doesn’t mind getting stuck in and putting his weight about, and often this will lead to yellow cards but I’d argue that every club needs one of these players in their side.

His height will also benefit United both going forward and at the back, too. He’ll be a massive target for corners and free-kicks, and with his heading ability he should be able to add a few goals, as well as stopping goals going in at the other end.

The brand new Manchester United website MUFC Related compared Marouane Fellaini’s stats against Manchester City’s Yaya Toure and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere. I know that stats can sometimes be misleading, but its fair to say United fans will be pleased with the following results:

As you can see, Fellaini scored more goals than both Jack Wilshere and Yaya Toure by a comfortable distance, and he also provided the same number of assists as the duo. The Belgian also had a better passing accuracy percentage than the pair as he completed 91% of passes, compared to 89% and 86%. Somewhat surprisingly, he also has less yellow and red cards than Toure and Wilshere too.

To sum up, I think we need to get behind Fellaini and give him a chance. Fair enough, judge him at the end of the season but he hasn’t played a minute of football for United yet, so lets see how he gets on.
