The Manchester United number seven jerseys has been worn by some red legends over the years, from George Best to “King” Eric Cantona, right through to David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. With Michael Owen departing after really not doing the number 7 justice, who is next in line?
The players currently at the club who could be in the running for it include Portuguese winger Nani, he has now been at the club for five seasons and for the most part been extremely inconsistent. However on his day, he terrorises world footballs best back fours. Personally, I wouldn’t give it to him for that reason, he is the most frustrating player to watch when he isn’t in the mood.
Next up on the list is Antonio Valencia, and for me he deserves it. He made an instant impact since his £16million move from Wigan and he did a good job of following the irreplaceable Cristiano Ronaldo on our right wing. If it wasn’t for his injury two years ago he could easily be one of those household names in European football. He has been back to his blistering best this season though, his wing play is first class, the way he just drills the ball into the box when given any opportunity is why he gets so many assists, and who can forget his goal right at the death in the game vs. Blackburn? He really is a game changer.
If one of the two above doesn’t get the jersey, I’d suspect it would end up with one of this years new recruits. Over the past few weeks we have been heavily linked to Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa and Lille’s Eden Hazard. For me these are two players our midfield has been crying out for.
We need a goal scoring midfielder who also has an eye for a pass, and both these players fit the bill. If I had to choose one of them, I’d go for Kagawa purely because he seems to have the right attitude, Eden Hazard has shown a lot of arrogance and cockiness over the past week or two, but is this what we need? Because lets be honest, Ronaldo was exactly the same, but we could grit our teeth and bare it with him as he is one of the best players in world football.
I’m sure Kagawa doesn’t really care what number he’s wearing, he’d just be happy to play for United, Hazard on the other hand reportedly wants the number 10 jersey and there is no way on earth he will get it. The outstanding choice for me is Super Tony, so give it him Fergie, and watch him go down in United history!
Eden Hazard seems to be on his way and would fit the No.7 role. Antonio Valencia however would be the best option for me to move to No.7. Had a great season. A proper winger and a proper No.7
