Why Man United should make their move for Youri Tielemans

Manchester United should renew their interest in Youri Tielemans this summer.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad will look significantly different from how it looks now. That much is obvious.

The Dutchman has to start somewhere in terms of signings. Why not midfield? This is arguably our worst position right now. It’s only going to become even weaker when Paul Pogba leaves.

Enter, Youri Tielemans. The Belgium international has been a longstanding Manchester United transfer target over the last few years. Now could be the perfect time to revisit a potential move for the Leicester City man.

Why, I hear you ask? Well, 90min.com believe The Foxes are ‘resigned’ to losing their star this summer. So-much-so that they’re now prepared to listen to offers for Tielemans.

The 25-year-old has been an integral part of a Leicester side that won the FA Cup not too long ago, with the club trying to sign Tielemans down to a new contract. That hasn’t happened, with his current deal expiring in 2023 – meaning Leicester have to sell now, or lose him for nothing in a year.

It’s believed Leicester want £40m to cash in on Tielemans, though a figure around £30m may well be enough to get the deal done.

For us here at Old Trafford Faithful, this feels like a no-brainer on United’s part. Pogba is leaving, as is Nemanja Matic. United need to get younger and more mobile at this position. Tielemans is the perfect option.

He’s a great two-way player who can positively impact this United side from day one. Tielemans is also available at a fantastic price, he has Premier League experience and rarely gets injured. What’s not to like?

Well, United’s lack of Champions League football could be a potential problem, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich all credited with an interest in the past.

90min.com stress that it ‘remains to be seen’ whether some of these clubs, including United, would renew interest in Tielemans. I’d be surprised if the club didn’t at least explore the option, though.

I’d argue Tielemans would be one of the first names on the team sheet if an agreement could be reached with Leicester. I’d also like to think United’s solid relationship with the Foxes could also play into our hands.

As is going to be the case for us with a lot of transfer targets this summer, we’re going to need a little luck. It’s dependent on us outbidding our rivals in terms of weekly wage and transfer fee, because we have to be honest, we’re not the most attractive proposition for a player at this moment in time.

That said, United should do their due diligence, see if Ten Hag wants to work with Tielemans and contact Leicester as quickly as possible if the Dutchman is keen on having the Belgian at Old Trafford next season.
