Manchester United brought in four huge signings over the summer, with Jose Mourinho looking to transform the overall look of the first-team squad. That is something that our new boss certainly achieved, but apparently, he wanted to add one more face.
The man in question is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, and the talented French defender has revealed that Manchester United had an offer on the table for him, but he chose to turn it down.
Now 23, Varane has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the game, despite often having to play backup to Pepe and Sergio Ramos. The fact that he wasn’t playing week-in-week-out led to chatter about his future, suggesting that it may lie elsewhere.
However, at this point in time the Frenchman reckons it is best for him to stay at Madrid and work with his compatriot Zinedine Zidane.
“Of course it’s flattering,” Varane responded when asked about Manchester United rumours.
“Manchester United are a very big club. But from the moment when Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there’s no questions to ask yourself.”
“I have always said I feel good in Madrid. It’s not easy to say ‘No’ to Jose Mourinho, but you have to weigh up the pros and the cons.”
“We’re men, we have decisions to make and that’s how it is.”
At the end of the day, both United and Madrid are amongst the biggest sides on the planet, and it goes to show just how talented Varane is if both of them want to sign him. You do feel this next twelve months is huge for him, and if Varane doesn’t get some game-time, he’ll be looking to move on.
