Wout Weghorst may yet be signed in time to play in the Manchester derby this Saturday.

Wout Weghorst will become a Manchester United player on a loan until the end of the season.

The Dutchman has been viewed as the short-term solution to United’s striker problem, with Cristiano Ronaldo no longer here in Manchester.

At the time of the rumour starting, I assumed this one would drag on until late in the window due to the three-way negotiations. Besiktas, his loan club, Burnley, his parent club and United, the club looking to acquire him.

Thankfully, the negotiations have been speedy. United will pay a minimal fee, direct to Besiktas, to compensate for them losing a striker who has scored eight goals in sixteen games in the first half of the season.

Now, according to journalist Alex Crook, there’s genuine hope that United could complete the signing in time for the player to be involved in the derby this Saturday. There’s no issue on the side of the player in regards to personal terms.

Weghorst strikes me as someone who could come in and do a decent job from day one. He’ll bring something completely different to the table – but that’s exactly what United need right now.

The Dutchman has an excellent goal record, is a physical presence, will work hard and lead the press from the front. What’s not to like about that?

More than anything, it just takes some pressure off Anthony Martial’s shoulders. The Frenchman cannot do it all on his own. Maybe, the extra competition will spur him on to give that extra 10% and we’ll perhaps see even better performances from him as a result.
