Wout Weghorst has taken to Instagram to defend himself touching the Anfield sign…
Manchester United, as a collective, were rightly slammed for their Anfield horror show this weekend. It’s a game that’ll always linger in our minds for the wrong reasons…
However, singling individual performances out just feels harsh and unnecessary. Not one player put in even a decent performance on the day.
Fans were quick to place blame on Bruno Fernandes. Yes, he was poor, though he wasn’t the only one. More recently, Wout Weghorst has copped some stick for touching the Anfield sign. Rumours about him being a Liverpool fan started to swirl. However, the player himself has taken to social media to defend his actions.
Weghorst states that he supported FC Twente as a lad, while his allegiance now lies firmly with United. His reasoning behind touching the Anfield sign was to stop his international colleague, Virgil van Dijk, from placing his hand on the sign as some sort of joke/attempt at a wind-up.

It just annoys me that people are quick to judge Weghorst’s actions, forgetting that he has been a vital player for this club ever since joining. On top of that, every single time he’s stepped out onto the field (barring Sunday), he has had a positive influence on the match.
I guess it’s the social media age in full flow. A week ago, Weghorst was pictured just taking it all in after helping United win their first trophy in five and a half years. It was truly wholesome content. A week later, those same fans are slating him, when every single player out on that pitch in United colours were just as bad as each other.
This isn’t the time for division amongst the fanbase. Instead, it should be time for us all to come together and get behind the lads – including Weghorst.
