On loan striker, Wout Weghorst, is hopeful of staying at the club beyond this summer.
Manchester United Football Club have struggled scoring goals this season. That has undoubtedly been their biggest issue. Anthony Martial’s fitness woes, Cristiano Ronaldo’s petulance and Wout Weghorst’s inability to finish. All three have had their individual struggles.
Weghorst only joined the club in January. Despite all his best efforts – and the fact that he has become a real cult hero amongst the terraces, it became clear pretty quickly that his quality (or lack of) in front of goal, would become a problem.
This is someone who excels in many other areas. Work ethic being his most significant selling point. Weghorst has also been the perfect team player and the consummate professional. I fully believe other players love working with him.
However, we covered a story claiming that Weghorst’s future would lie elsewhere, with United not ready to bring him back beyond this current loan.
Well, the player himself seems to believe different. In an article by The Times (subscription required), it’s claimed that the 30-year-old United player remains ‘hopeful’ of staying at the club beyond this summer. We won’t go too deep into the article as it’s behind a paywall, but that’s the general gist of the piece.
Weghorst has been more positive for this club than negative. I firmly believe that. He’s offered something to the side that wasn’t there before he joined. However, it pains me to say that he’s just not ready to start at this level on a regular basis.
If Ten Hag has a plan for Weghorst to stay and play as a third or fourth choice striker then I genuinely don’t think that’s the worst idea in the world. Though the price would have to be right, while Weghorst would have to understand his role would be limited.
