Wout Weghorst has been a good little addition for Man United since January, though against Newcastle United, his flaws were on full display.

Manchester United Football Club were forced into bringing in someone to fill their striker void during the January transfer window. They have Cristiano Ronaldo to thank for that.

The Old Trafford side opted for Wout Weghorst – most likely due to familiarity with manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman was brought in on loan from Burnley, with the eyebrows raised amongst the terraces at the Theatre of Dreams.

When brought in, everyone was consistently told about his unreal work rate as a starting point. There can be no arguing that his on-field attitude is exemplary.

However, his small amount of goals, while playing as a striker for Manchester United, is the real cause for concern. Sadly, his finishing has not been up to scratch – which has cost United in some circumstances.

Yesterday against Newcastle, the 30-year-old showed why the Reds will not make his move permanent. It was a truly poor display from the Dutchman, who couldn’t get into the game at all.

It took the Burnley striker until close to the fifteenth minute of the match to have a touch. Now I know that’s not all his fault, though sometimes, you have to know when to sit a little deeper to get into the game.

Weghorst was just oblivious to what was going on around him, which is a genuine cause for concern. The striker also didn’t really show that excellent work rate, though he was likely frustrated after a really tough afternoon at St. James’ Park.

The difference in quality between he and Martial as there for all to see when the Frenchman came on. United looked like a far bigger threat as soon as Weghorst was off the field, though they do have different skillsets and qualities.

This isn’t to say Weghorst has been a bad player. More often than not, he’s stood up when we needed him the most. Look at the Carabao Cup final, for instance, he was instrumental that day against the same opponent.

Sadly, the inconsistency, coupled with the lack of genuine finishing ability, means his time at Old Trafford will not be extended beyond this summer.

In the long-term, that sadly means Ten Hag has yet another position to fill within this squad, while big money will likely have to be spent to find the right man.
