Wout Weghorst remains intent on staying at Man United beyond this current loan period.
Manchester United made some stop-gap signings in the January transfer window, with Erik ten Hag sealing a couple of important loans. Both those players, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer, have played their part.
It is becoming increasingly clear, to me at least, that neither player is up to the standard required to turn their loan moves into permanent ones. Weghorst, in particular.
The Dutchman works his socks off for the cause. That exemplary attitude cannot be denied. However, the lack of goals for a striker will always come back to haunt him.
According to The Telegraph, the United loanee does want to stay at the club beyond this season, though transfer negotiations with the 30-year-old are yet to take place.
This is a summer during which United have already been linked with several big-name strikers, in an effort to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo. You sort of get the impression that Weghorst doesn’t fit into those plans – as sad as it would be to see him go.
Weghorst has turned into a cult hero amongst the terraces. You cannot fault his incredible work ethic and winning mentality. He does the dirty jobs well, while leading the press from the front. It all comes back to his lack of goals scored. Sadly, United cannot put their trust in a man who has only scored twice since January.
I wouldn’t be against Weghorst staying as a third-choice striker option, but I still don’t think United would go for that as they’d much rather promote from within. You have the likes of Charlie McNeil and Joe Hugill waiting in the wings. Both have massive potential. Both are just patiently waiting for that opportunity.
