Young Man United duo expected to leave on loan after tour snub

The absences of Alvaro Fernandez and Shola Shoretire from the pre-season tour squad have been explained.

Manchester United confirmed a 31-strong pre-season tour squad yesterday, jam-packed with first-team regulars, academy graduates and even a new signing.

However, there was also plenty of absences in that squad. Rich Fay had the full details over at the Manchester Evening News. He explained Phil Jones is on a specialist programme due to his injury history, while Brandon Williams is dealing with a small issue.

What was most interesting to us, though, was the absences of both Alvaro Fernandez and Shola Shoretire. Both of whom have been in and around the first-team over the last few months.

Well, Fay explains that the young United duo are ‘expected’ to leave on loan in the coming weeks after their tour squad omission. Di’Shon Bernard and Teden Mengi are also in a similar situation.

Let’s start with Shoretire, who actually made his debut for the club a couple of seasons ago. Injuries haven’t helped his case, while United have been pretty well-stocked in his position.

The Englishman is still supremely young aged just eighteen, with the footballing world at his feet.

Fernandez won the Reserve Team Player of the Year in 2021/22, which speaks volumes about his ability. Again though, his issue is the fact that United are competitive in his position.

The left-back is behind Luke Shaw, Alex Telles and now Tyrell Malacia in the pecking order. Sadly, there was never going to be more than three left-sided defenders taken out on tour. He’s more than good enough to move on loan to a high-level Championship club, though.

A loan move away for both these guys would allow them to play regularly, whereas at United, they will not be offered that luxury.
