I think it’s fair to say that Manchester United’s pre-season tour hasn’t quite gone according to plan thus far, with the Red Devils only registering one victory in four outings.
However, due to senior players participating in the World Cup, it has meant ample opportunities for some talented youngsters on the books at Old Trafford. Amongst those impressing over in the United States; Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
After emerging on the scene during Louis van Gaal’s tenure at the club, the Dutchman has somewhat faded into the darkness under Jose Mourinho. Last campaign, he spent the season with Crystal Palace, and there can be no doubt about the fact that regular football helped turn him into a better footballer.
Now, the 20-year-old has outlined his plans, while sending a strong hint to Mourinho that he plans to break into the first-team any which-way possible, playing practically any position.
“Last year, I was at Crystal Palace, I think I improved there and I’ve come back a better player,” the Dutchman said, per ESPN.
“I came back to show that I’ve improved and to show that I’m a better player now. I’ll keep working hard and see what happens.
“I can play right-back, right wing-back, centre-back, in midfield. For me, it’s possible. I’ve played centre-back and right wing-back [on the tour] so for me it’s not a problem. I wouldn’t say in goal — in goal I would be very bad.”
This hunger and dedication will only serve him well. Fosu-Mensah’s an extremely bright talent, with time still on his side. Heck, he’s barely out of his teenage years.
We’ve seen just how capable he is as a footballer, and talent-wise, there aren’t many better in Manchester at the moment. There certainly could be an opening given the current injury situation at the moment, who knows, if Matteo Darmian is actually sold, Fosu-Mensah could be our starting right-back going into the 2018/19 campaign; and what an opportunity that would be. It wasn’t that long ago when he apparently wanted out…
